The 7 Stages of Cyber Security Grief

There are seven grief stages, each representing a different level of awareness and preparedness for a cyber attack. This blog post will discuss the stages and what you can do to protect your company from a cyber threat.

How far has your company come?

The cyber security landscape is constantly changing, and businesses of all sizes are at risk of being attacked. Cybercrime is predicted to cost the global economy $10.5 Trillion annually by 2025.

With so much on the line, it's no wonder that many companies are in a state of grief regarding cyber security.

Phases of grief have long been recognised as a sequence of stages that distressed individuals pass through when confronted and compelled to deal with an unforeseen event. This model can be applied to companies grappling with cybersecurity threats.

To protect your company from a cyber threat, you need to understand which stage your business is in when it comes to cyber security.

Shock

We're exhausted by the flood of reports about data breaches, identity theft, and state-sponsored hacking. It's too much data to comprehend! This stage is often followed by a period of paralysis, as businesses are unsure what to do next.

Denial

In this stage, businesses believe they are not at risk of being attacked. They often downplay the severity of cyber threats and think their security measures are enough to protect them.

Anger

Businesses are now getting angry about the cyber threats they face. They often lash out at their employees or customers, and they may even try to blame others for their security problems. Why do we have all these regulations-surely? It is a scam to make money out of us small businesses.

Depression

At this point, businesses may feel like there is no hope and they are powerless to stop a cyberattack; it's just going to be money down the drain from now on with no end in sight. To protect your business in this stage, you need to stay positive and motivated and understand that the return on your investment is security and protection for your business.

Experiment

In this stage, businesses may decide they have to do something, buy some anti-virus software or hire an expert. This is a good start, but it's not enough.

Decision

Ok, now you are starting to take action to protect your business from cyber threats. You may decide to invest in cyber security technologies or train employees on cyber security best practices. To protect your company in this stage, you need to continue to test your cyber security defences and understand this is a business concern, not just an ICT issue.

Acceptance

The final stage of grief is characterised by acceptance and seeing the light. This stage is driven by the realisation that cyber attacks are a part of doing business in the 21st century and can't just be fixed with one solution; it is a business risk to be managed continuously.

Turn Acceptance into a Cyber Security Plan

To protect your business, you must have a cyber security plan and ensure your employees are trained to respond to cyber attacks. Cyber security is a journey, not a destination.
